Last checked Oct. 17, 2026. Facts on this page come from the city’s Environmental Services Division and its collection schedule.

City of High Point crews collect household garbage and yard waste once a week and recycling and bulk items every other week. Everything goes out on the same day of the week, and every cart has to be at the curb by 6 a.m., when collection starts. A cart that is not out when the truck passes waits until the next scheduled pickup.

What goes out, and when

Cart What How often
Brown cart Household garbage Weekly
Black cart or paper bags Yard waste Weekly
Green cart Recycling Every other week
Pile at the curb Bulk items Every other week, on your recycling day

Your recycling and bulk week is shown on the city’s collection map and on the 2026 recycling calendar. Garbage must be in a city-approved roll-out cart. Backyard collection is available for residents with a verified medical disability.

Set carts with the handle and wheels facing the house and 3 feet clear of other carts, mailboxes, shrubs and parked cars, according to the city’s recycling cart guidelines. Garbage found in a recycling cart gets the cart tagged, and repeat violations can lead to fines or the cart not being emptied.

Outside holiday weeks, the city looks at missed carts case by case; call 336-883-3111.

City of High Point trash collection holiday schedule

High Point’s regular routes run Monday through Thursday, and Friday is held back as the catch-up day. When a city holiday lands on a route day, that day’s garbage, recycling, yard waste and bulk pickup moves back one day, and so does every later route that week. A holiday on a Friday changes nothing. This is the city’s full 2026 list, from its collection schedule:

Holiday Week What changes
Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Monday, Jan. 19 Jan. 19-23 All routes moved back one day
Good Friday, April 3 March 30 to April 3 Normal schedule
Memorial Day, Monday, May 25 May 25-29 All routes moved back one day
Juneteenth, Friday, June 19 June 15-19 Normal schedule
Independence Day (observed), Friday, July 3 June 29 to July 3 Normal schedule
Labor Day, Monday, Sept. 7 Sept. 7-11 All routes moved back one day
Veterans Day, Wednesday, Nov. 11 Nov. 9-13 Wednesday routes on Thursday, Thursday routes on Friday
Thanksgiving, Thursday, Nov. 26 Nov. 23-27 Thursday routes move to Friday
Christmas, Friday, Dec. 25 Dec. 21-25 Normal schedule
New Year’s Day, Friday, Jan. 1, 2027 Dec. 28 to Jan. 1 Normal schedule

The next holiday weeks, day by day

Veterans Day week:

  • Monday, Nov. 9: Monday routes, as normal
  • Tuesday, Nov. 10: Tuesday routes, as normal
  • Wednesday, Nov. 11: no collection
  • Thursday, Nov. 12: Wednesday routes
  • Friday, Nov. 13: Thursday routes

Thanksgiving week:

  • Monday to Wednesday, Nov. 23-25: normal
  • Thursday, Nov. 26: no collection
  • Friday, Nov. 27: Thursday routes

Your recycling and bulk week does not change in a holiday week; it simply moves with your garbage day. The city has not yet posted its 2027 holiday list. Columbus Day is not a collection holiday in High Point.

The city says that because of extra volume in holiday weeks, drivers cannot come back for missed carts, so have carts out by 6 a.m. on the shifted day. In very hot, very cold or icy weather, the city may change the schedule; call 336-883-3111 to check.

Bulk items

Bulk pickup is for the occasional large item, such as a sofa, chair, mattress, carpet or appliance, not a whole-house cleanout, according to the city’s bulk item page. The rules:

  • Bulk items go out on your recycling day, by 6 a.m.
  • Do not mix limbs, yard waste or recyclables into the pile; it will not be collected.
  • Lumber from your own project must be cut to 8 feet or less. Contractors must haul away their own waste.
  • The city does not collect tires. Take them to the Guilford County Scrap Tire and White Goods Collection Facility, 2138 Bishop Road, or to a household hazardous waste event.

Yard waste and fall leaves

Grass, leaves, limbs and brush are picked up weekly on your regular day. Since July 1, 2023, the city no longer takes yard waste in plastic bags. Use the black yard waste cart, paper bags, or bundles no longer than 4 feet and no heavier than 50 pounds, according to the city’s yard waste page. Repeated use of plastic bags can bring a $250 fine. A 95-gallon yard waste or recycling cart costs $70 from the City Collector’s office, 211 S. Hamilton St., or through the city’s online request form.

Loose leaf pickup by the Street Maintenance Division runs in two rounds, according to its loose leaf page:

  • Nov. 2-20: Monday and Wednesday garbage service areas
  • Nov. 30 to Dec. 18: Tuesday and Thursday garbage service areas
  • Jan. 4-22, 2027: Monday and Wednesday areas, second round
  • Jan. 25 to Feb. 12, 2027: Tuesday and Thursday areas, second round

Have piles at the curb by 7 a.m. Monday of your round, within 8 to 10 feet of the street and free of sticks, limbs and trash. Do not rake leaves into the street or over storm drains. You can also drop yard waste at the Ingleside Compost Facility, 3001 Ingleside Drive, open 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturdays.

Hazardous waste, electronics and sharps

  • Household hazardous waste event: 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 14, at 1401 E. Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, with secure document shredding, according to the city’s hazardous waste page. Paint, pesticides, motor oil, batteries, pool chemicals and similar items are taken; business waste, asbestos and explosives are not. Questions: 336-807-4817 or 336-883-3681.
  • Any other time: Guilford County residents can use the collection center at 2750 Patterson Ave., Greensboro, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. weekdays and 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays; 336-373-2196.
  • Lithium-ion batteries never go in a cart. Take them to a hazardous waste event or a retail drop-off.
  • TVs and computers are banned from landfills in North Carolina. Drop them at the High Point Material Recovery Center, 5875 Riverdale Drive, Jamestown (8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday), or at the Ingleside Compost Facility during its hours.
  • Needles and syringes go in a puncture-proof sharps container. When it is full, call 336-883-3111 for a free pickup.

Kersey Valley Landfill

The city landfill is at 3940 Kivett Drive, Jamestown, open 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, according to its facility page. A convenience center with dumpsters sits at the front. The tipping fee is $48 a ton plus a $2 state tax, with a $7.50 minimum for pickups, SUVs and trailers and $2 for cars. It does not take yard waste, tires, paint or hazardous chemicals.
