Welcome to High Point. Most of what a new household needs, power, water, sewer and trash, comes from one place: the City of High Point, which runs its own electric utility. This page lists what to set up, in roughly the order you will need it, with links to our detailed guides.

First week checklist

Power, water and sewer

The City of High Point provides electricity, water and sewer to its customers and bills them on one utility bill. To start service, call the customer service call center at 336-883-3111, 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. weekdays, according to the city’s start service page. Many accounts can be set up by phone; some need a visit to Customer Service at 211 S. Hamilton St. The city runs a credit check on request to decide whether a deposit is needed; deposit details are on its deposits and fees page. Moving within the city? Use the transfer service form.

If your address is outside the city’s electric system, your power may come from Duke Energy; check with your landlord, seller or the city. See our power outages guide for who to call when the lights go out, and save the 24-hour line, 336-883-3111, for power, water and sewer emergencies.

Natural gas

Piedmont Natural Gas serves High Point, which appears among its North Carolina communities in the company’s annual filings. Start service on Piedmont’s start, stop or move page.

Internet

Check which providers serve your exact address on the FCC’s National Broadband Map, which lists wired and wireless providers by address. AT&T publishes service for High Point on its High Point page, with an address check for internet service.

Trash and recycling

Garbage and yard waste go out weekly; recycling and bulk items every other week. Carts must be at the curb by 6 a.m. Full schedule, holiday changes and fall leaf pickup in our trash and recycling guide.

Schools

Public schools are run by Guilford County Schools. Find your assigned school by address and register online; details, calendar dates and test results in our schools guide.

Driver’s license, registration and tags

From the NCDMV’s moving to North Carolina page:

  • Within 60 days of making North Carolina your permanent home, if you drive, get an N.C. driver’s license and title and register your vehicles.
  • Get the license first; you need it to title a vehicle.
  • North Carolina requires a vehicle inspection before you can renew your registration, but not to register for the first time.
  • Since Oct. 1, 2026, the state no longer issues a plate sticker or printed registration card when you register or renew.

Find the nearest driver license office and license plate agency with the NCDMV’s office locator.

Property taxes and tax relief

Guilford County bills High Point property owners for both the county and city tax. North Carolina does not have a general homestead exemption. Guilford County does offer relief for homeowners 65 or older or totally and permanently disabled, within income limits, and for disabled veterans; applications are due June 1. Rates, due dates and appeals are in our property taxes guide.

Permits

Planning a fence, shed, deck or renovation? Most work needs a city permit; see our building permits and zoning guide.

Voting

Register to vote at your new address through the N.C. State Board of Elections; see our voting guide for deadlines and polling places.

Pets

We found no City of High Point or Guilford County pet license requirement. North Carolina law requires that dogs, cats and ferrets 4 months or older be vaccinated against rabies, according to Guilford County, which offers free one-year rabies shots at its rabies clinics. To use Hedgecock Dog Park, register your dog with Parks and Recreation; it is free. See our parks and trails guide.

Who to call

Council members by ward, the city manager, police and code enforcement numbers are in our who to call at City Hall guide.
